What role does storage play in grid congestion?

Grid congestion occurs when the electricity grid can no longer handle the demand for transport capacity at certain moments or locations. In parts of the Netherlands this already affects both feed-in (returning solar power) and consumption (for example charging points and heat pumps).
Why does grid congestion occur?
The electricity grid was originally built for a predictable, one-way flow from energy company to user. As solar panels, batteries, charging points and electric heating have grown, supply and demand fluctuate far more strongly, especially on sunny or busy moments.
What can battery storage do about this?
- Local storage of solar power — energy that would otherwise be fed back at a peak moment stays available locally.
- Flattening peak load — a battery can step in at moments of high demand, instead of everything running through the grid.
- Flexibility for the grid — some systems can be used to relieve the grid in exchange for a compensation or a lower rate.
Relevant for businesses and homes alike
For businesses, grid congestion can mean that expanding the grid connection is not simply possible. Battery storage can then help you keep growing within the existing connection. For homes it mainly plays a role with solar panels: storage means less electricity is fed back at peak moments.
