What exactly does an Energy Management System do?

An Energy Management System, or EMS for short, is the software and control layer that determines how the different parts of your energy system work together. Without an EMS, your battery, solar panels, charging point and consumption operate alongside each other. With an EMS, they operate with each other.
What does an EMS handle in practice?
- Deciding whether generated solar power is used directly, stored or fed back into the grid.
- Deciding when the battery charges or discharges, based on consumption or energy prices.
- Adjusting the charging power of a charging point to the available connection capacity (load balancing).
- Flattening peaks in consumption so the connection is not overloaded.
Why is this relevant for you?
Without control, you run the risk of feeding solar power back for a low compensation while buying that same electricity back at a high price an hour later. An EMS prevents this by switching intelligently between storing, using and feeding back.
An EMS in business settings
In business systems an EMS often plays a bigger role: it monitors peak load, supports the business case for a battery and can connect to monitoring systems for reporting and maintenance.
